lj, send us away!

more updates on fabulous east coast whirlwind later, because now is the time that we poll:

Because we are indecisive, [info]keryx and I request your consultation on our itinerary for the first annual August Bank Holiday (TM), which in future will not in fact occur in August, excursion. We're travelling August 4-7.

After exhaustive analysis, we still had three places that we were all "woo hoo! let's go right now!" about. Help us narrow!

Where should we go?
    ++ San Francisco, CA
    ++ Seattle, WA
    ++ Key West, FL
    ++ somewhere else?
Go vote!

What is it you are looking to do? Seattle is more accessible for most things than SF, and the people aren't quite as rude. Seattle has a nice aquarium, though not nearly as expansive as Baltimore's, and there is the Space Needle, and Peer 99 (?) which is a fish market and a bunch of cool shops down on the waterfront. Hiking Ranier is a day trip, and you can also head down to St. Helens (if you'll be staying that long). There's also a huge pink elephant at a car wash near the Space Needle.

SF has the bridge, the redwoods, the Fisherman's Wharf, Haight/Ashbury, etc. I think it's a bit more expensive, but it probably has a better clubbing scene.

Of course, if I were headed that way, I'd go to Portland, OR. It has the largest independent bookstore in the world (Powell's), the largest urban park in the U.S. (Forest Park), a huge rose garden connected to a Japanese garden and connected via miniature train to a pretty nice zoo, and of course the McMenamins series of pubs. St. Helens is an hour away, and Seattle is a short 3 hours, which makes it a nice day trip. You can also go to the Timberline Lodge on Mt. Hood, which is where they filmed the exterior shots for The Shining (except it doesn't have the hedge maze). But Portland is not as city as SF or Seattle, though it does have a few good clubs.

Pike Place Market, is the place with the feeshes and stuff. Seattle also has McMenaminseses. And lots of great nightlife, etc.

(Disclaimer: I'm moving to Seattle in a few months out of pure love for the city, so I'm quite biased.)

portland, oregon also has my awesome uncle's erotica bookstore, which is right around the corner from powell's. whee!

i suppose we're looking for: good food, fun, meeting lj peeps, relief from virginia weather, cute boys, art, and some good old american kitsch.

we are not looking to hike, or partake of nature's gloriousness other than to look at it and say, tree pretty.

SF is DEFINITELY relief for VA weather. When people tell you to bring a sweater, believe them.

I've seen plenty of cute boys. Most of the time they are kissing other cute boys. Might not help you all that much.

right - as margaret cho says, i should have been more specific: cute straight indie rock geeky boys who like cats and neurotic almost-30-somethings.

I've never been to Seattle. San Francisco rocks but Key West may be the best place I've ever been. I vote Key West.

ooh - i don't think we know anyone who's actually been there... is it cheap and tacky? ... or 'spensive and posh? it seems like it should be a bit of both...

and there the whole pie thing, which is a definite bonus.

i voted for both san francisco and seattle, for 2 very simple reasons (or, rather, one, really, that comes in 2 exciting flavors): i know wild, mad, crazy-minded adventure-boys in both towns i could connect you with who know all there is to know about having yourself a blast of almost any variety in either locale.

heh.

they're my favorite wild, mad, crazy-minded adventure-boys in the whole world, btw. & one of 'em has a sexy welsh accent.
